  1. 1876-1957. Romanian sculptor, active in Paris
  2. from 1904, a pioneer of abstract forms and
  3. conceptual art. He was one of the first
  4. sculptors in the 20th century to carve
  5. directly from his material, working with
  6. marble, granite, wood, and other materials.
  7. He developed increasingly simplified natural
  8. or organic forms, such as the sculpted head
  9. that gradually came to resemble an egg
  10. (Sleeping Muse 1910, Musee National d'Art
  11. Moderne, Paris). By the 1930s he had achieved
  12. monumental simplicity with structures of
  13. simple repeated forms (Endless Column and
  14. other works in Tirgu Jiu public park,
  15. Romania). Brancusi was revered by his
  16. contemporaries and remains a seminal figure
  17. in 20th-century sculpture. In 1904 he walked
  18. from Romania to Paris, where he worked
  19. briefly in Rodin's studio. He began to
  20. explore direct carving in marble (producing
  21. many versions of Rodin's The Kiss).
